Warm Springs Mourns Sgt. Chris Fisher After Fatal Shooting

With heavy hearts, the Warm Springs community is mourning the loss of Sgt. Chris Fisher, a Warm Springs Police Department officer who was fatally shot Tuesday night while serving his community.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Fisher was killed at approximately 11:57 p.m. Tuesday in Warm Springs, Georgia. Investigators say he was sitting in his patrol vehicle after completing an unrelated traffic stop when a black Chevrolet Silverado pulled alongside him. The driver, identified as 23-year-old Jimmy Lee Steverson, allegedly fired multiple shots into the patrol vehicle before fleeing the scene.

Fisher was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following the shooting, the GBI issued a statewide Blue Alert for Steverson, warning the public that he was considered armed and dangerous. A massive manhunt involving multiple law-enforcement agencies quickly followed as authorities searched for the suspect.

The search ended Wednesday in Anderson, South Carolina, where authorities located Steverson. Officials said he had suffered an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound and was transported to a local hospital, where he later died.

While the immediate manhunt has ended, the investigation into Fisher’s death remains active. Authorities are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the shooting and are working to establish a complete account of what happened.

For Warm Springs, the tragedy has left a community grieving and a police department mourning one of its own. Fisher’s death is a painful reminder of the risks law-enforcement officers face every day while protecting and serving their communities.
