According to traffic and transport authorities, the incident occurred during the early hours of Friday, September 4, with emergency and law-enforcement teams responding to the scene. The N1 North was brought to a standstill while officials worked to secure the area and manage the crash.
Initial reports circulating from the scene described a truck that had overturned, with its load scattered across the roadway. The debris and vehicles involved created significant obstruction, resulting in severe congestion for motorists attempting to travel through the affected section.
Authorities urged drivers to avoid the area where possible and make use of alternative routes, particularly the R81 or R521, until the N1 could be safely cleared.
Later reports confirmed that the crash involved a Volkswagen Polo and a truck transporting steel pipes. The Polo was reportedly overtaking when it collided head-on with the truck. The driver of the Polo, a man, died at the scene, while no injuries were reported among those in the truck.
Recovery and clearance operations were expected to cause further delays as authorities worked to remove damaged vehicles and debris from the highway.
