Gibby Fire Near Ortega Highway
The Gibby Fire became a major concern in Orange County after a brush fire was reported Wednesday afternoon near the 34700 block of Ortega Highway in Rancho Mission Viejo.
Initial reports indicated that the fire was only a few acres, but subsequent updates reported substantially more acreage as firefighters continued working to control the blaze. The fire prompted road closures along Ortega Highway, affecting travel between the Rancho Mission Viejo area and Lake Elsinore.
Fire crews used both ground resources and aircraft as they worked to prevent the flames from spreading through surrounding vegetation.
The incident highlights the continuing wildfire risk in Southern California, where dry vegetation, wind and difficult terrain can allow relatively small fires to grow quickly.
Hilary Fire in Los Angeles County
Another recent Southern California fire was the Hilary Fire near Palmdale in Los Angeles County.
The fire started near East Barrel Springs Road and North 40th Street East and initially threatened nearby homes. Evacuation warnings were issued for residents in affected areas as firefighters worked to stop the fire’s advance.
According to CAL FIRE, forward progress was stopped at approximately 74 acres, and evacuation warnings were subsequently lifted. The agency’s latest incident information listed the fire at 86% containment.
The incident demonstrates why residents should take evacuation warnings seriously even when a fire initially appears to be relatively small.
